BEHIND GREEN STEPS: Andrew Muraguri

Team Intro

Author:

Green Steps

Short summary:

Meet Andrew, an enthusiastic Sustainability Management Student who chose Green Steps for his ESC year!

Do you have a Nickname?
I do not have one that I share with people, however there are some who like to make their own nickname for me. Pretty fun to hear new nicknames!

Explain to a stranger what do you do for Green Steps?
Greensteps is a non-profit organisation with a mission to transform the current traditional education curriculum of indoor learning, to outdoor learning (place-based learning). Through the observation of the green urban spaces around the city, children have the possibility to learn and grow a connection to nature, creating and nurturing a natural 3rd space.

What is your daily routine? What is something you like doing and your coworkers maybe don’t know about you?
What others are not aware of my daily routine, is that it consists of taking in the presence of the day either through interactions, sports, or tidying up my space. I try to align my daily routine with creating rather than consuming, as I know that the life I have is precious and do not want to take anything for granted.

Use less than 250 words to tell a story about yourself: starting from “where are you from” to the choice of joining Green Steps.
I was born in Nairobi, Kenya. I currently undergoing a part-time study in Sustainability Management at the FH IMC Krems and plan to graduate the following year. Greenstep was a confident choice of mine from the resonance I felt through their mission. I stand behind with the idea that true impact to solve the climate crisis and navigate through it, is by introducing nature-based developmental ciriculum utilising the green spaces around. In addition, the distance between Greensteps and Krems is also of convenience.

Mention a book you read as a teenager that still tells something about you, and that you would still suggest reading.
Night John Nightjohn is a historical fiction novel by Gary Paulsen about slavery in the American South and the life-changing power of literacy. The message captured in this story correlates with the reason why I chose Greensteps. Education brings awareness and impact, hence place-based learning can be foundational in the first phase of Environmental consciousness.

How do you expect you and Green Steps to have an impact in the next years? Close with a wish for the organization.
I expect our collaboration to be fruitful in expanding the Commons in ARK through the efforts of mapping out the vast green spaces found in the Vienna region.  A wish I shall bestow for Green Steps is for the recognition of the impact of ARK from influential institutes in trasnforming traditional school ciriculum.
